Burberry was founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856 as a specialty store for outdoor wear and sporting goods.
Thomas Burberry was not just an entrepreneur but an innovator and invented the water resistant fabric gabardine in 1888. The company would continue to specialise in outerwear 100 years after it was founded. The famous Burberry check was introduced as an inside lining to trench coats during the 1920s when it was also registered as a trademark.
But in 2003 Burberry became a victim of its own success by association with the much maligned chav which left it a damaged phenomenon...Christopher Bailey came to its rescue in 2001 after being appointed chief creative director. Responsible for the design of all Burberry collections and product lines including Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London, Thomas Burberry and all Burberry licensed products globally, he is also responsible for its overall image including all advertising, corporate art direction and store design. With his help those memories of counterfeit Burberry baseball caps on stalls at every market have since been forgotten. So has that of Eastenders actress Danielle Westbrook and her baby dressed in Burberry head to toe. Fast forward several years and Burberry is now celebrating a 21 percent rise in half year revenues, as fashion fans rush to snap up its latest and greatest ever collections.
Continuing momentum is the Burberry 2011 sunglasses collection featuring the signature Burberry check. The brand is reincorporating the iconic pattern to their sunglasses this season with the use of bold colour and graduated detailing. Taking centre stage is
