The look of 2009 was very much defined by the Ray-Ban (2140) Wayfarer and Ray-Ban (3016) Clubmaster. A combination of the two, Ray-Ban model 4140 has the sculpted temples of the original wayfarer and the iconic lenses of the mythical Clubmaster. This year, however, little round sunglasses such as these are in and are among the anticipated trends of the summer.

Round sunglasses last appeared as a fashion statement in the 1960s, when they were a defining element of hippie style. Throughout the years circular sunglasses have been closely associated with intellectual thinkers and rarely those noted for their innate fashion sense, unless you count John Lennon.

Yet something about the style has clicked with designer sunglass makers, who all seem to have come to the same conclusion – round sunglasses are unquestionably cool.

However, round sunglasses are not face friendly and usually look best on those who have strong jaw lines. But 4140 is slightly larger and more angular, with the stems positioned higher up on the frame, and so is much more flattering.

There is no obvious source for the revival other than style soothsayers Mary-Kate Olsen and Lady GaGa. Mary Kate was first seen wearing a pair of round sunglasses at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, while Lady GaGa has been spotted wearing them all over the place (including her music video Paparazzi).
