History
Carrera's history stems from 1956, a tale of great adventure in both
the eyewear and sports sector. A story of how enthusiasm and success has
transformed a simple sports orientated idea into the next big thing.
In 1956 the Carrera brand was created by Willhelm Anger, who took the
name from the Carrera Panamericana - an automobile race that used to
stretch all the way across Mexico during the 50s. Twenty years later and
the company changed its name to Optyl International, devoting itself
entirely to the production of motor cycle goggles and ski masks.
Then in 1964 the company patented 'Optyl', a heat hardened plastic
that weighs 20% less than acetate, eyewear made from this resin ensured
the wearer ultimate comfort in any given situation with its amazing
memory foam effect.

Carrera International was established in 1977 and had headquarters
and management situated in Austria. Carrera International, headed by
Albrecht Rosenauer, presented a new line of sports eyewear to the market
which achieved substantial success.
1979 saw the release of Carrera Porsche Design sunglass collection,
developed with automobile designer Ferdinand Alexander. In a short space
of time the collection acquired immeasurable success and fame.
Towards the end of the 80s era, the brand began to pay attention to
the sports industry. In 1987 Carrera became the official sponsor of
America's Cup that very same year, while in 1988 the brand triumphed at
the Calgary Olympics as its sponsored team athlete's took home 16 gold,
13 silver and 16 bronze medals.

The Olympics threw Carrera into the spotlight and in 1989 during the
World Cup ski championships in Vail and Lathi, Carrea was confirmed the
largest producer of ski masks.
In 1996 the company teamed up with a world leader in the sector of
high quality eyewear, which enabled the fusion of technology and design
that Carrera eyewear offers today.
