Dior Sunglasses

Since its creation in the mid 1940s, Dior has continued to keep Paris at the fore front of global fashion.

The Beginnings of Christian Dior Sunglasses

Famous for creating the ‘New Look’, Christian Dior launched his first fashion collection in the Spring/Summer of 1947. This new collection went down in fashion history as the "New Look" after Harper's Bazaar 's editor-in-chief Carmel Snow's exclamation, "It's such a New Look!" This innovative designer’s collection was hailed as the next big thing, due to Dior using below-mid-calf lengths, full-skirts, large busts (which fell from style in 1912), and small waisted silhouettes. In refutation to the post-war fabric restriction, Dior used 20 yards of extravagant fabrics in his creations. Controversial and extravagant, this ‘New Look’ was a trend to hit every woman’s wardrobe including the Tinseltown starlets and European socialites, who became Dior’s personal clients. This not only put Christian Dior on the fashion radar with prominence, but also aided Paris to regain its fashion crown after losing it amidst WWII.

Dior soon became a name on everyone’s lips, and in 1949, its New York boutique opened. By the end of the 40s, Dior made up over 75% of Paris fashion exports and a further 5% of France exports across all industries. With the branding ‘Christian Dior’ holding global clout, a licensing agreement was devised, introducing hosiery, furs, hats, gloves, handbags, jewellery, lingerie, and scarves to the fashion house’s offerings. Dior become so ‘en Vogue’ that mega movie star, Marlene Dietrich appointed Dior to create her dresses in the Alfred Hitchcock film 'Stage Fright'.

Continuing its domination within the fashion industry, Dior opened its first boutique in the UK in 1952, down one of London’s famed designer fashion streets, Conduit Street. Shortly after, in 1957, Christian Dior passed away after a third heart attack, leaving the iconic brand without its maker. Chaos ensued, so to bring the label back on its feet, Rouët, Dior’s General Manager promoted the twenty one year-old Yves Saint Laurent to Artistic Director the same year. The clothes were as meticulously made and perfectly proportioned as Dior’s in the same luxe fabrics, but the new designer made them softer, lighter and easier to wear. Yves Saint Laurent was hailed as a national hero.

The Heritage of Christian Dior Sunglasses

Boasting a number of firsts, Dior was the first designer to launch a fragrance to accompany its line, baby Dior to grow with its loyal clients, and Miss Dior that offered a ready-to-wear collection. With this list of revolutionary additions to the fashion industry, it’s no surprise that the designer brand is deemed one of today’s visionaries and the Dior sunglasses collection reflects not only the brand’s rich, Parisian heritage, but also offers a varied mix of contemporary styles for both men and women. Some of the colours and tones used are vivid and dazzling whereas some used are darker or more neutral, but all create a luscious and opulent piece of eyewear These colours have then been incorporated into designs which perfectly accentuate Dior's sumptuous characteristics.
