Chanel, Versace and Dior Reveal Latest Couture in Paris
Hot on the heels of the autumn/winter 2013-14 menswear shows Paris Haute Couture week, the jewel in the crown of the fashion year is under way. It may be out of reach for the majority of us but who can resist witnessing the likes of Karl Lagerfeld working completely unrestrained?
Atelier Versace opened proceedings with a bang on Sunday night. It was a powerful play of oversized suits in pinstripe, neon and gold. Princess Charlene, Kevin Costner and Ne-Yo were in attendance at the impressive Le Centorial old bank building.
The highly anticipated second couture offering from Raf Simons at Christian Dior didn’t disappoint. An ultra modern couture kept a tight rein on embellishment, cut and colour to stunning effect more than lived up to Simon's debut last season. Cropped wigs, sequined lips and transparent pumps were subtle styling details that echoed the updated vision of couture. Sigourney Weaver, Jessica Alba and Chloe Moretz were amongst those in attendance.

Although Dior had a good go last season using a million fresh cut flowers to line the walls, Chanel won’t be beaten when it comes to runway settings. The Grand Palais was transformed into a forest for the highly anticipated spring/summer couture show. Inevitably the clothes more than lived up to the elaborate scene in their detail and beauty. Looks ranged from yet more fresh incarnations of the classic Chanel suit to Thirties style sequined gowns in black, white and red that reveled in the gothic look of the era. A characteristic astounding array of looks from Karl Lagerfeld was not only great choice for the elite client but also gave us another chance to marvel at one of the greats at work.
Obama showed his support for gay marriage in his inaugeration speech the day before. For the traditional bridal finale Karl Lagerfeld made in his own statement on the catwalk. Three Chanel clad figures closed the show. Two brides walked hand in hand along with Lagerfeld's four year old god son summing up the designer's thoughts as plans to allow same sex marriage and adoption for same sex couples sparked protest in Paris last week. Diane Kruger, Rita Ora, Ines de la Fressange and Hailee Steinfeld were amongst those to appreciate it in the flesh.
