Philander Inspires SA
Vernon Philander simply couldn't have hoped for a better start to 2013. The Oakley cricket superstar was at his devastating best as South Africa thrashed New Zealand by an innings and 27 runs in their first test match of the year.
Philander passed a late fitness test prior to day one's clash, much to the relief of Proteas' fans. And he gave them something to cheer early on as he mercilessly wiped out the New Zealand top order. Five wickets fell in 25 balls as the tourists were bowled out for just 45 runs at Newlands. Philander's final figures were resounding--five for seven in six overs.

SA Step Up
When it was their turn to bat, South Africa were dominant as they cruised to a score of 347. This was largely down to the efforts of Alviro Petersen, who chalked up a century (106). He was eventually dismissed by Trent Boult.
Like Philander, Jacques Kallis also had his Oakley sunglasses on standby should things get difficult. His total of 60 meant he became only the fourth player in test history to score over 13,000 runs. It's a milestone only Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting have reached.
Black Caps Improve
An improved New Zealand display in their second innings restored some pride. Dean Brownlie scored his maiden test century as the Black Caps finished on 275. Brownlie made 109 before being dismissed by Mourne Morkel. The second test match gets under way on 11th January.
