It was over a decade ago Oakley first dabbled in designs for this hot piece of metal and glass!

STRAIGHT JACKETS of the year 2009

Original STRAIGHT JACKETS encompass IRIDIUM lens coatings to ensure a reduction in glare and balance light in differing conditions. This is down to the transitions in the lens and arguably the best polarised lenses available.

You don’t want to have to be worried about the wear-abouts of your sunnies all day, once you put them on they should stay there comfortably until the sun goes down. Grab yourself this frame and it’ll offer you guaranteed Oakley ‘3 point fit’ coupled with UNOBOTANIIUM components to make sure that even if you’re pumping iron or racing round the track, perspiration wont come between you and your Oakleys. The best way to describe this is I need my Oakleys in the way girls need chocolate. Yeh you get it, I get it, lets say no more!

Standard qualities across the STRAIGHT JACKET range include High Definition Optics (HDO’s), which offer the best in clarity and precision of vision. Full UVA protection comes as standard and as an extra addition, all harmful blue light is filtered by a PLUTONITE coating added to the lens. Then there’s the new technology, the HYDROPHOBIC lens. Literally? Its scared of water! It repels water in the way that I repel women! And the lasting effect? I hate to say it, but again, NO evidence of having being there at all!!! Hate to further my analogy, but the lenses also comply with ANSI ZA7.1 standards…..having no impact at all!

POLARISED STRAIGHT JACKETS

Take it that step further by choosing the POLARISED STRAIGHT JACKET. Whereas normal polarised lenses can become distorted with wrap around, Oakley ensure this is far from the truth. Not only do they possess the HDO’s, impact standards and sharp optics, Oakley have gone that extra mile with these lenses.

If you haven’t come across these lenses before, Ill just run you through it. So, in the STRAIGHT JACKET you can choose from a range of lens coatings. Firstly we have the IRIDIUM coating. This balances the light in the light density you are in to filter through just the right amount of light. The coating will look mirrored and shimmers in light. They also reduce glare, which can occur when light beams down onto metal or shiny services and can cause you to squint without glasses, or even with normal lenses. Secondly, you can have TRANSITIONS lenses. These work by altering their gradient to respond to the conditions they are put in. Smart eh?!

For me they’re great for going on my runs either early morning or light afternoon. The lens prevents me from squinting and when I’m on the side of the road I don’t get blinded by reflected glare from cars and off the shiny road when its been raining. Furthering this unobstructed view, Oakley have put this special coating on the lens which is HYDROPHOBIC. Not one to not say what they really mean, Oakleys special coated lens have the outstanding quality of not only repelling water and sweat, they also have anti-smear. When I’m on my run I like to ix it up, but in road, bit through fields, mud tracks, beach, you know how it is. So its great that the lenses also repel dust or dirt of the tracks. Its good when your’ having a nice warm up or wind down run not to have to worry about the elements, just concentrate on the task in hand, and with this polarised STRAIGHT jacket lens, you can do just that. FISHING SPECIFIC

If this is the look you’re after then you won’t be disappointed with the quality. Mainly, they do an outstanding job of stopping glare hit your eyes. I mean, I enjoy a spot of fishing, but I have to admit when my dad took me out on my first trip, I had to battle with having to fuss about with my hat and the one hand over my eyes squint look. Not great when you’re after a relaxing day, feet up with a tinny amongst the reeds. Of course, the prospect of having my first beer enticed me back the next time! Glad I did. With the proper protection for your eyes fishing is every bit the day it lived up to be.

The DEEP BLUE filter as much blue light as possible to ensure your eyes will never feel strained and the latter do the same but allow more green wavelengths through so you can see what’s swimming in the shallow water. So... the Straight Jacket, is it as harsh as it sounds? Well a real straight jacket is an instrument that restrains and limits you, and this Straight Jacket is quite the opposite! Your vision isn’t limited and with their exceptional lenses, that we’ll get on to later, you’re definitely not restrained in anyway. The only thing I can honestly say they really have is common is that they fit snugly!

I have found the fit is something that Oakley really should be credited for. The earsocks are brilliant and keep the sunglasses firmly in place with no pinching. Oakley use Unobtainium on the 3 points that the sunglasses need it most, where they make contact with you, therefore the unobtainium is present at the nose bridge and at either side of the head. The unobtainium is an ingenious creation and it increases grip with perspiration! So when you’re giving it your all, in whatever your sport, you can be rest assured that your sunnies won’t be moving about your face and your optics will stay in place, where they should be!

The Straight Jacket, in my opinion, is well designed to keep this frame fashionable as well as practical for sporting use. I generally find that most sporting sunglasses are all about performance and aesthetically are not too great, but the Straight Jacket is different. The arms are what really did it for me; they are sinuously shaped and look awesome. It’s great that you are able to use these for strenuous activity as well as a leisurely.

One thing I found really interesting about the Straight Jacket was the way in which the lenses are manufactured; five metal compounds are fused to create durable C-5, a lightweight alloy that unlocks comfort, that’s a lot of effort Oakley have gone to, to create just one frame, but its well worth it as they are really light weight, you can almost forget your wearing them! The lenses even have a hydrophobic coating so they repel dirt, dust, skin oil and perspiration so they are easy to keep clean and refuse to obstruct your vision. Another great component with this is the pure plutonite lens filter, it blocks 100 percent of all UV rays and reduces glare with amazing effect. Oakley’s high definition optics offer unbelievable clarity while the contour of the lenses open up your peripheral view and when it comes to impact protection, the Straight Jacket meets all ANSI Z80.3 Industrial Standards.

“I love these sunglasses! The Straight Jacket combines the styling of a lifestyle sunglass with the performance options of a sport sunglass. The look is cool and aggressive and the fit is perfect. The earsocks keeps them firmly on your face without pinching your head. It’s hard for me to pick a favourite colour… the Blood/VR28 is great and looks awesome in person. The sunlight brings out a sparkle in the dark red frame. On overcast days, I love the Shadow Camo/Transitions combo. The Transition lens work really well. Or you can’t go wrong with the Polished Black/Black Iridium or the Livestrong edition, but the most unique pair would be the White Chrome/+Red Iridium… I always get compliments while wearing these.”
