Tightrope walking or Funambulism is the art of walking along a thin wire often at great height. For once Oakley have done a great job of matching up their product names with the product and on a few levels! Ouch. Long, thin wires carefully follow the smooth contours of the oval lenses on the Tightrope.
The History of the Wire
The daddy of the wire; the Whisker, paved the way for a new generation of Oakley sunglass back in the day and the design is still going strong today. The beauty of the wire? If you aren’t already familiar with the wire, then Ill give you some inside info. At first glance they look delicate, but masculine at the same time. When I got my first pair of Whiskers, I was dubious. So I’m a guy and I’m careless (sometimes). I knew these sunnies weren’t going to have an easy ride. I fell in lust with the Whisker at first glance. I loved the sporty and professional look, I had to have them. The greatest thing about these sunglasses is that they will withstand a hell of a lot of wear and tear. Don’t be fooled by their delicate appearance, you can chuck them in your gym bag and in the car door, hell I even sat on mine once and they kept their shape. No scratches, bends or blemishes.
A new addition…
So onto the Tightrope! The new addition to the wire family (namely Nanowire, Square Wire, Square Whisker) and I’m ready to update my collection! With a slightly rounder lens and thicker nose bridge, the Tightrope are doing a grand job of withholding the wires untainted reputation.
Durable C-5 alloy has been digitally sculptured to engineer the thinnest frame ever manufactured by Oakley. Not only does this sound and look impressive, but is done for a reason other than just to show off! Its thin lines give a streamlined look and the power of strength in a what-looks-like delicate frame.
Ok so they are a bit more weighted than the majority of Oakley frames, but I don’t find them heavy and think the weighted metal gives the sunglasses a more expensive look.
Multi-use
If you want to wear them to play sport, they have qualities to suit. Unobotanium (Oakleys name for the rubber bits on the stems) ear socks not only make the sunglasses more cushioned on your ears, they also increase grip as you sweat so will stay on your face through even the most strenuous of exercise.
The great thing about the Tightrope is unlike some other Oakleys, you wont feel like a twat wearing them to a BBQ or down the pub, or in the morning on the way to work. If you wanna go for the polished sophisticated look, the Tightrope are for you.
Tightrope Polarised lenses utilise a liquid infusion process technology to bond the polarisation to the lens at a molecular level. Sounds fancy? Well yeah it is. The polarised lens will block out all horizontal light rays only allowing vertical rays through. Great for driving, fishing or skiing, the polarised filter prevents the suns rays rebounding off shiny or reflective surfaces and into your eyes. With no need to squint, we can use this competitive edge to be one step ahead in our game be it tennis or driving.
Vision
Aside from the precisely engineered frame, Oakley have matched the quality of their lens with the ingenuity of the frame. High Definition Optics (HDO’s) account for the clarity of vision, colour and contrast. Lenses have full UVA UVB protection and anti impact technology to prevent the lenses scratching or smashing if you drop them.
The back of the lenses if coated with an anti-reflective technology so what’s behind you can’t interfere with the task in hand! Smudging? It happens to the best of us. But with Oakleys hydrophobic coating, the lenses will repel water dust and dirt to ensure your vision stays clear.
Colours
Easily the best new addition to the Oakley 2010 range, the Tightrope come in Pewter, Chrome or Carbon Fibre frames. Too easy to add a suave edge to your look, the Tightrope come in a range of Iridium and Polarised lenses. I’ve got my eyes on the Carbon Frame, Tungsten Iridium lens, they look so smart, I know the other half would approve and above all, they will go with everything. Bottom line? The new Oakley Tightrope…they wont let you down.
