Pupillary Distance Measurement (PD)
The Pupillary Distance (PD) is the distance between the pupils in
millimetres. For us to provide or quote for prescription sunglasses this
measurement is required.
The most common measurements are between 58mm and 68mm.
We strongly recommend you get the measurement from your optician when
having your eyes tested. It takes them a few seconds to provide the
measurement.
If you were to measure the distance yourself
- Stand with you face about 20 cm from a mirror.
- Close your right eye and look only with your left eye.
- Place a ruler flat against the mirror and align it horizontally
with the millimetre scale pointing up.
- Look over the top of the ruler and align the zero mark in the
centre of your left pupil.
- Open your right eye and close the left, but do not move your
face or the ruler.
- Read the millimetre measurement corresponding to the centre of
your right pupil.
- Repeat the procedure several times to make sure you have a
consistent measurement.
Another method if you wear glasses using a non permanent market is to
have your helper stand in front of you and mark a dot in the centre of
each pupil on your glasses. Then measure the distance between the dots
in millimetres.
