Prada Sport 50HS Polarised
The sunglasses review is all about style verses performance. The
Prada sunglasses have polarised lenses and although from the Prada Linea
Rosso collection to many this is still Prada Sport so are they more than
just another pair of designer sunglasses? Do they work for more than
just looking great?
Style
The is no doubt in the mind of most men and ladies that Prada is a
highly desirable brand. It has that real A class look, feel and sound
and in the world of eyewear Prada is exclusive but just about affordable
to most working people as a nice luxury item. The styling of this
particular pair of sunglasses is based on an aviator shape, pretty much
a timeless design that you will be able to wear in years to come without
looking out of place. The arms are thicker than you would find on most
aviator sunglasses and have the Prada red stripe as you would expect
from the sports collection. The arms are rubber pads on the insides
giving the sunglasses drip and comfort. They have adjustable nose pads
enabling you to get them to fit perfectly on your face at the desired
height. The from of the sunglasses are curved giving them a more sporty
feel than a classic aviator that would sit away from your face at the
sides. Being curved they hug your face maybe not as much as a typical
sports frame but enough to provide an excellent look and feel about
them.
Desirability
A good test of desirability is simply to wear the sunglasses out and
a perfect opportunity on a Sunday in February that feels like a summers
day. Plenty of people flock to Southend to get near the sea and enjoy
the almost summer temperature and sunshine. Out of the 14 people I was
out with nearly all of them tried them on and out of all of them
everyone one wanted them! OK so a big pass for desirability.
Lenses
This particular pair has polarised lenses and it does put the price
up, but the same model is available without polarised lenses.
Prada 50HS colour options can be found here. So what does polarised
mean? Polarised lenses help cut out the glare and are essential for
things like sailing and fishing when you are on the water and have the
glary surface. A lot of people like polarised lenses on snow when the
pure white surface can reflect the light as much and as bright as the
sun itself. They can be excellent for driving because they cut out the
glare. Below are a couple of shots with and without the lenses.
Shot looking out over the Pier Southend on Sea with no lens

Taking the same photo through the lenses of the Prada Sunglasses

As the sunglasses have such large lenses I was able to take the shot
through the lens of the sunglasses. What you will notice when you pay
particular attention to the detail is the photo through the lens has
more detail and contrast. The small ripples in the sea show more
definition. The shadows are more intense. But the real difference is
from the glare. The sun was just outside the shot and without the
sunglasses there is so much glare to the left and above the pier that it
is almost pure white but with the lenses you can clearly make out the
horizon. Imagine this if you are driving, the road is wet and the sun is
low. The wet road without polarised sunglasses may be so bright that you
can not see at all. Something worth considering if you are likely to be
wearing the sunglasses for driving.
So you are thinking get the polarised ones? Well buying a polarised
lens does have a few disadvantages. Probably most people who would buy
Prada eyewear own an IPod. Well looking at the screen with polarised
sunglasses can be a problem, along with some mobile phone, however my
Nokia was fine. The way the filters work in the lenses can create
strange effects on some surfaces. Backs of car windows may look a bit
strange and if you look at a LCD screen from an angle or sideways it may
look completely black. Two pairs of polarised sunglasses turned at right
angles may produce a completely black effect that you can not look
through.

The image on the right is kind of what it looks like looking at your
IPod screen. Polarised lenses are certainly practical for driving,
fishing, sailing and if you are buying your sunglasses for these things
then definitely get polarised lenses. If you are buying them for just
looking good and you know you use and IPod or similar electrical device
with screen try it out or think twice.
The lenses, polarised or non polarised are actually very good. There
is pretty much zero distortion that I could see even right at the edges
there is no distortion and this is pretty good for sunglasses with such
curved lenses. As the sunglasses have very deep lenses once I had
adjusted the nose pads so they sat nicely on my face looking up the
field of view saw the sunglasses almost meeting my eyebrow allowing only
minimal light through. As they are fairly wrapped there is minimal light
from the sides. The arms are pretty high on the temples and do not
interfere with the peripheral vision meaning for driving they would be a
good choice.
Overall they are a fantastic choice and if I was buying them I would
definitely get the polarised ones. I use an IPod but it does not bother
me that much having to either remove the sunglasses from time to time or
just select random and be happy!
