Challenging the likes of Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner may be a daunting task for some, but Yamaha rider Ben Spies has risen to become a genuine contender to snatch the prestigious MotoGP Championship crown.

Oakley athlete Spies' progression has been relentless, and he went from virtually unknown to win the AMA Superbike Championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008. This remarkable form saw Spies make the step up to the World Superbike Championship in 2009, which clearly wasn't a big enough platform as Spies destroyed the competition and won the Championship in his first season.

Spies' successes attracted interest from the MotoGP and the Monster Tech Yamaha 3 team promptly signed him in 2009. The rider's progress shows no signs of stopping, and in 2011 Spies made history as the only World Superbike rider to win a MotoGP race.
