Aviator

Aviator – this is a popular sunglass style consisting of a tear drop shaped lens and usually a thin metal frame, first developed by Ray Ban in the 1930s. The style was named ‘aviator’ as it was initially designed for American pilots as they wanted to reduce the amount of glare from the sun while they were flying but without having to wear uncomfortable, clumsy goggles. The large size and curved shape of the aviator lens provides a substantial amount of protection from glare. It is a style that has been popular since the 1930’s, becoming increasingly popular within the American military and police force. The introduction of mirrored lenses added to the popularity of aviators among police officers as the lack of direct eye contact emphasises their authority, and suggests a sense of distance as people cannot make eye contact with them.

Since the 1960’s the aviator has also became a highly fashionable style among the general public, and the film Top Gun was responsible for making the aviator particularly popular in the 1980’s. Many brands now have their own version of the aviator, although Ray Bans remain the most popular. As sunglass lenses have continued to be developed by manufacturers it is now possible to have various materials, sizes, colours and some are also available with polarised and photochromic lenses.

Mrs Holmes is a wife, mother and successful actress, a role model to us all, so whose Katie’s role model? Jada Pinkett Smith.

She said to People magazine ‘Jada is so strong. She is a rare woman – a phenomenal friend, mother, wife. She inspires me.’

Her husband, Tom Cruise, added, ‘Jada tells it like it is. She creates art in her life … She’s effortless. She just has such class.’

‘She is an extraordinary woman and an amazing mother. She’s constantly wanting to improve herself and her family.’

Agreeing, Katie referred the fellow actress as a ‘powerhouse’.

Italian style brainchild, Emporio Armani, has been getting into the festive spirit by designing a number of berry red aviator frames. Armani's 9535 aviator has adopted classic tear drop lenses that are set in a delicate niche red frame, the face connects to elongated arms decorated with splashes of contrasting black and distinguished tips. Both arms proudly display the universally recognisable Armani eagle.
