UVUV rays – the name ‘ultra violet’ means ‘beyond violet’ and refers to the fact that UV rays have shorter wavelengths than the shortest visible colour, violet. These rays can be very harmful to the eyes but there are ways to protect ourselves from them. Sunglasses help to block UV rays and prevent them from reaching our eyes. Sunglasses should all have some level of protection but not all are 100%.Exposure to UV rays can cause eye problems such as cataracts and even tumours. There are three types of UV rays – UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA are dangerous as their wavelengths are longer than the others which means they can pass through glass. UVB are the most dangerous rays and it is because of these that we should all wear sunscreen and sunglasses to protect ourselves. UVC rays are not dangerous to us as they cannot pass through our atmosphere to affect us. If sunglasses are marked with UV400 this means that they block all the harmful rays, as they prevent wavelengths of up to 400 nanometers which covers UVA and UVB rays.
