The first ever style of sunglasses ever made was named ‘Aviator’, which helped to improve the performance of army fighter pilots in the Second World War. Since then they have become the most iconic brand of sunglasses in the world. Ray-Ban has always offered technology in advanced lenses, protecting eyes against UV radiation. 1986, a great year for two reasons….the year I was born and the year Tom Cruise graced our screens with the ionic film Top Gun and bought ‘the aviator’ into our lives. The image of him walking across the hanger, fighter jets overhead and donning his pilot uniform. Girls loved him (past tense!) and guys wanted to be him. All the right elements were there, but the outfit wouldn’t be completed had it not be for the Ray-Ban aviator touch.
Created by none other than the world renowned Ray-Ban, for 70 years, Ray-Ban have continued to churn out not only arguably the most famous sunglasses in the world, but the most respected too. Obviously they have been various shapes and designs to suit, but for me, it has to be the aviator every time, its such a classic!
Here’s a bit of history for you; aviators weren’t fundamentally made for fashion, their primary aim was eye protection. Originally created for pilots, to ensure eye safety and maximum peripheral vision in the air, the Ray-bans evolved from goggles (not cool) into the slanted tear drop shape we know and love today (super cool)! Thus providing these awesome Retro accessories!
Lets face it, sunglasses are a celebrity staple and most celebs own at least one pair of Ray-Bans, be it the Aviator, Wayfarer or new Jackie O’s. Most won’t leave home without them! Not to mention a godsend, behind a pair of aviators you can hide a multitude of sins! Morning after the night before? Want to create an aura of mystery? Or not want to let someone see your vulnerability? Opt for the mirror lenses which ensure you can see out, but others cannot see in!
Worn by celebrities from Ashley Tisdale, Rene Zellweger, Taylor Momsen and Justin Long to Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt! If you’re a fashion junkie, it’s clear these are a must have! You can wear your sunglasses with pride, knowing that you are sharing your style with some of the most famous faces in the world! Or if you’re like me, it won’t have been these recent celebs that have swayed you, but the fact that these sunglasses are an icon, if you are a child of the 80’s then you’ll be an avid follower for sure!
Ray-Bans are a classic example of a sunglass which need not be seasonal. Purchase a pair of aviators and they can see you right the way through your style calendar! However, if its variety you crave, you won’t have to look far! As when it comes to colour, the most recent 3025 range boasts around 40 different frame and lens colour combos to ensure you won’t be left in the dark.
Day to day wear? I’d give them ten out of ten, they fit comfortably and won’t fall off your face. However when it comes to sports, I wouldn’t recommend them. They don’t have much grip and as are made from glass, if you loose them from your face, you’ll almost certainly need to be forking out for a new pair!
Aside from your classic dark green lens (and it is dark green by the way, Ray-Ban do not do black lenses!), the aviator also offers neutral brown, grey, mirrored, photochromic and polarised options! Not to mention the ultra-trend of the moment and top tip for this years festival goers; the gradient lens, which comes in grey and brown.
Fancy something a little special? Opt for the limited edition silver mirrors 18 carat white gold 8028k or grab a polarised pair for that extra something special and sit proudly at the forefront of technology!
Well, as I’m sure you’re already aware, Ray-Bans are Italian made and Italians are very particular with high standards, demanding the best and highest specifications. Simply carrying the ‘Ray-Ban’ signature etched into the lens assures us we are getting a good quality item. To confirm this, when I hold my Ray-Bans, the glass lenses give them some weight (you’re first assurance you’re getting the real deal) and as for comfort, the stems are wirey and lightweight, meaning they are durable and fit to your temples for an easy wear all day fit (there’s your second!). The nose pads carry the signature ‘RB’ and are easily moveable too, so you can adjust them to suit (I make that 3/3!).
Well I purchased both pairs from the Sunglasses Shop, coming in at 75.95 each. Not bad considering a friend of mine came boasting a week before thinking he’d cut a great deal for one at £90! I know where I’m buying my next pair!
I own 2 pairs. The classic Gold frame Dark Green Lens (3025 L0205) and the bang on trend (of course!) Silver frame with Gradient Brown lens (3025 004/51). These are my babies. On receiving my first pair, I felt in a way honoured, like I was joining this elite group of ‘cool.’ Aviators are a universal language of cool, everywhere you go round the world, you can be sure you’re walking down the street in style with eyes of envy burning into you. I’ve had the Gold frames a while now and am looking to upgrade. I’ve noticed the Polarised Silver Mirrors (003/59) which I’m pretty confident you can’t find many other places in the UK! Ok so they com in slightly more at £95.95, but you can’t put a price on an item assured to make you feel unique!
There are lots of variations on the aviator shape. The caravans, 4112’s, a more rounded aviator with thick coloured plastic frames, closely followed by the ultra popular CATS , 3211, the aviator visor, or the outdoorsmen with a band to joining both lenses 3407 to name a few!!
These are a great pair of day to day retro sunglasses which promise never to go out of fashion! Not only that, but a total wardrobe staple for guys and girls. I take mine everywhere with me and they never let me down! Grab yourself a pair of these high flying beauties and you are guaranteed to have a friend for life!!
